THE DAILY WAR!

THE HOLY ROMAN
B16's first appointments to the College of Cardinals this week include some strongly political choices reflecting the direction and priorities of his papacy.
EMPIRE OF THE GERMAN NATION
The raucous reception by some members of Germany's 2.5 million-strong Turkish community to "Valley of the Wolves" has German politicians worried so worried, Bavaria's interior minister sent intelligence service agents to theaters showing the film to "gauge" audience reaction and identify potential radicals. Edmund Stoiber, Bavaria's conservative prime minister, asked theater owners to not show "this racist and anti-Western hate film."
German politicians seem to come in pairs. Economics Minister Michael Glos is a man behind the scenes, and as the CSU's front man in Berlin, is deeply rooted in his party. He became economics minister only because Edmund Stoiber, the CSU chairman, chose to remain Bavaria's premier.
A truce was called last week in a battle between the Bundesbank and federal government over the country's 3,400 tonnes of gold reserves.
EUROPE/RUSSIA
Book review
Europe's religious scene is rich, diversified and contradictory. It presents a far more subtle picture than is suggested by the American caricature of Europeans as feeble and benighted atheists.
As a rule, the EU doesn't do defence. At most, it messes around at the margin. In 1999, it promised to set up a 60,000-strong rapid-reaction force. When this turned out to be not much of a force, several countries promised 1,500-strong battlegroups, ready to jet off on peacekeeping missions at a drop of a blue helmet. What EU countries have never done is to club together to spend money on defence.
[WAR: The EU is a paper tiger that will soon collapse - leading to the collapse of all the "prophecies" of the wanna-be COG prophets!]
MIDEAST/AFRICA/ASIA
Al-Qaeda has threatened to launch further strikes to force infidels out of the Arabian peninsula.
Last weeks desecration of a Shiite shrine moved Iraq towards civil war. Abdel Bari Atwan, who has had unique access to Osama Bin Laden, explains why Al-Qaeda wants to divide Islam.
Iran has agreed in principle on a joint venture with Russia to enrich uranium. But further talks are needed, said the head of Iran's nuclear agency.
Europe could lose the Iranian market and and sustain damage should sanctions be imposed on Iran, an Iranian official warned.
Africa's oil giant is facing economic and political chaos on several fronts. Oil firms and western governments, including the Americans, are watching nervously.
HOUSE OF ISRAEL
Is the recent deal to allow the Dubai government effectively to take over control of container and stevedore operations in 22 US ports part of a secret plan to launch a military strike on Iran?
The Bush Crime Family's close business dealings with the royal houses of Kuwait (the Sabah family) and Dubai (the Maktoum family) either borders on or is treason according to information received from U.S. military and Persian Gulf sources.
ECONOMY
The health of companies and the wealth of economies no longer go together.
MISC
Here's a fun (frustrating?) little computer game.
For all you drug addicts...
* "The person who takes medicine must recover twice - once from the disease and once from the medicine." William Osler, M.D.
* "The cause of most disease is in the poisonous drugs physicians superstitiously give in order to effect a cure." Charles E. Page, M.D.
* "If all the medicine in the world were thrown into the sea, it would be bad for the fish and good for humanity." O.W. Holmes, (Prof. of Medicine Harvard University)
* "Every drug increases and complicates the patients condition." Robert Henderson, M.D.
* "In sickness the body is already loaded with impurities. By taking drugs/medicines, more impurities are added, thereby the case is further embarrassed and harder to cure." Elmer Lee, M.D.
* "The necessity of teaching mankind not to take drugs and medicines, is a duty incumbent upon all who know their uncertainty and injurious effects; and the time is not far distant when the drug system will be abandoned." Charles Armbruster, M.D.
