"The WAR on error"
"Manly men in their assertiveness, raise and deal with uncomfortable and difficult issues, bringing them to the fore and making them public instead of sweeping them under the rug. "

B16's address at Lateran Univsersity
"I am happy to be here in "my" University, because this is the University of the Bishop of Rome. I know that here the truth is sought, and so ultimately, Christ is sought, because he is the Truth in person. This journey towards the truth -- trying to know the truth better in all of its expressions -- is in reality a fundamental ecclesial service."
B16's address to Academy of Sciences
"This increasing "advance" of science, and especially its capacity to master nature through technology, has at times been linked to a corresponding "retreat" of philosophy, of religion, and even of the Christian faith."
Cardinal on link between love and common good
There is a direct relationship between the common good and the capacity to love, says the president of Rome's John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family.

Social teaching, now in Kiswhahili
A Kiswahili translation of the Compendium of Social Doctrine of the Church has been published (to) give a concise and complete overview of the Church's social teaching in an attempt to make the teaching accessible to many people in East and Central Africa.
A Russian Orthodox view of papacy, and more (part 1)
Bishop Hilarion Alfeyev of Vienna and Austria, representative of the Russian Orthodox Church to the European Institutions, commented in this interview on Benedict XVI's forthcoming visit to Turkey, as well as on other topics.
Will the Vatican't change course on condoms?
The Catholic Church laid down a tough, absolute law in the 1968 encyclical Humanae Vitae: no condoms, no abortion, no contraceptives. Never. Now the condom part of that rule is being reviewed, and if it is changed, expect new challenges to the entire contraception doctrine, to the doctrine of papal infallibility and even to the church's abortion rules. Pope Benedict XVI has ordered a Vatican staff report on whether condoms can be approved for situations in which there is potential for HIV infection. If in fact Benedict moves away from the absolute prohibition against condoms, it likely will be a very measured step.
[WAR: As I recently told someone, this teaching was one of the main targets of the AIDS hoax - in order to get all those millions of 3rd-World Catholics to wear condoms and quit having so many babies. Why? Because all this 3rd-World growth and increase in Catholics is a national security threat to the US - as spelled out in NSSM 200 that was drawn-up by Kissinger and Bush. I'll be really shocked if B16 changes this teaching.]

Bavaria wants EU-Turkey talks frozen
Bavarian premier Edmund Stoiber called for a suspension of European Union membership talks with Turkey, saying Ankara had broken its promises towards bloc member Cyprus. Stoiber plays a key role in influencing government policy.
Merkel: Situation is "very, very serious"
With Turkey still refusing to open up its ports to European Union member Cyprus, Chancellor Angela Merkel sees accession talks with Ankara in grave danger.
Analysis: DM under fire
In another blow to the reputation of the German armed forces, a newspaper accused German soldiers of holding a loaded gun to the head of a young boy in Afghanistan. The recent scandals have only added weight to a number of political blunders by the country's defense minister, whose job may be in danger.
Navy prepares for terror attacks
The German navy patrolling the Lebanese coast is preparing to fend off suicide bombings by speedboats or other small vessels.
EUROPE/RUSSIA
German proposes a European army
Kurt Beck, leader of the Social Democrats, called for a European army with a single command, the first time a German political party has proposed such a structure. Beck said Europe should become a "global peace power" with its own military command and goals. The proposal was immediately rejected by President Lech Kaczynski of Poland.

Kissinger meets with Jewish leaders on Iranian threat
In a meeting last week in New York, one of a series of meetings on planning the future of the Jewish people, former U.S. secretary of state Henry Kissinger took part. Kissinger had accepted an invitation from the Jewish People Policy Planning Institute to be one of a group of leaders tasked with setting strategic goals for improving the situation of the Jewish people. Last week's discussion centered on the Iranian threat to Israel.
Withdrawal of US/UK forces will bring security to region
Security followed by widespread enjoyment of freedoms and a flourishing of cultures and civilizations in the Middle East will be possible only if US and British forces leave the region, said an Iranian government spokesman.

Khamenei: Iran harbors no animosity with world states
Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei said that the Islamic Republic of Iran harbors no animosity with any country but will seriously defend its interests whenever threatened.
HOUSE OF ISRAEL
This election is about Bush, and his party must go
For the first time in its memory, the New York Times editorial board will not endorse a single Republican Congressional candidate. It is frightening to contemplate the new excesses Bush could concoct if he woke up Wednesday and found that his party had maintained its hold on the House and Senate.
Wake me when it's over
Every election season is the same. In order to get what we want, we have to vote for what we don't want. Well, that kind of thinking will never end a war.
Voting: Suppressing change
It seems a worthwhile time to ask ourselves, now, while so many of us are at a fever pitch, before we know the results of the election and bask in elation or wallow in sorrow, before the question recedes far into the background, subordinated to our efforts either to exploit our side’s newfound power, or to gather strength and mobilize for the next election battle: what is this thing so many of us are about to do?
Tragedy, farce, and worse
The Bush administration must be in some form of internal meltdown, so much so that its political strategists have lost all connection with reality.
Who are "the people"?
The democratic principle is based on the people (or, the population) ruling themselves, but nowhere is "the people" clearly defined. In reality "the people" are not anyone with real interest in government, but only those people the government have already approved. The democratic fiction is that "the people" rule themselves through appointing government representatives, but the fact is "the people" is defined by government.

Paranoid Protestant stumbles upon some truth
As I said in my column two weeks ago, the bigger problem is not the pastor, but the pastorate system. "Give us a king!" the ancient Israelites squawked to God. Since this "king" system continues to chew up and spit out even our best leaders, it's time to retire the system. The fall of Ted Haggard can be a huge blessing if it opens our eyes to the flaws of the pyramid model. By eliminating the Holy Man-of-the-Cloth system, we can draw the entire church into a participatory family. Then holiness and accountability will be everyone's job, and we'll have 100% of the church doing the work instead of dumping everything onto the shoulders of one pastor-hero-father-king standing on a wobbly pedestal.
