Antichrist on Christ...
Benedict XVI has finished the first part of a book entitled "Jesus of Nazareth: From the Baptism in the Jordan to the Transfiguration," which will be published next spring. "I wished to attempt to present the Jesus of the Gospels as the authentic Jesus, as the historical Jesus in the authentic meaning of the word."

The Rizzoli Publishing House announced that the work of the pope is a "magnificent fresco, in two volumes, on what the Pope describes as ‘the mystery of Jesus.’" The Pontiff indicates in the book’s foreword that this should not be considered infallible from a magisterial point of view. "This work is not an absolute act of magisterial teaching, but merely an expression of my personal research into the face of the Lord. Therefore, everyone is free to contradict me."

Before he became Pope, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was pondering the relationship between faith and reason and the cultural consequences of its collapse. Some of these reflections are collected in a new book, "Christianity and the Crisis of Cultures".

At the request of Benedict XVI, a dossier on the question of condoms was submitted by Cardinal Javier Lozano Barragán to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

Over the weekend, some Berlin retailers and shoppers were the first to take advantage of a new law that allows stores to set their own hours and stay open longer. This weekend, Dussmann became one of the first German retailers to take advantage of a new law passed by the Berlin Senate a few weeks ago that allows stores to be open 24 hours from Monday to Saturday and for 10 Sundays annually.
[WAR: Hmmm ... sorta goes against what "that prophet" has said about the mark of the beast already coming into force. This new law actually helps COG members!!]

And if Berlin wasn't enough...
Shops on a broad stretch of the Champs-Élysées could be allowed to open for business on Sundays, helping transform to the traditional day of rest into something many in France long have resisted: a day of consumerism.

President Vladimir Putin said in a veiled warning to Poland and other East European nations on Wednesday they risked creating fresh divisions in Europe by treating Russia as an enemy instead of a strategic partner.

The dramatic failures displayed by the Israeli military in the war against Hezbollah have many in the country doubting Israel's military might. In an interview, Major General Doron Almog, 55, who heads one of the army's internal investigative commissions, warns that his country is now less feared by its neighbors.

Lebanon's worst fear is a return to civil war. This assassination will re-awaken that fear because it seems to have been designed to inflame sectarian tensions at a time when Lebanon was already going through a profound political crisis.

The international community voiced its shock at the assassination of the Lebanese Industry, a leading member of the anti-Syrian bloc, with the finger of suspicion pointing at neighboring Damascus.

Knew it before he said it...
President George W. Bush accused Syria and Iran of fomenting violence and instability in Lebanon, as he condemned the assassination of Lebanese cabinet minister Pierre Gemayel.

Analysis...
Pure political and diplomatic logic makes it difficult to see Damascus behind the assassination. The day Gemayel was killed, Syria chalked up one of its most significant diplomatic achievements since its defeat in Lebanon in April 2005: the renewal of full diplomatic relations with Iraq. The last thing Damascus needed was a new accusation of a political murder in Lebanon.
[WAR: As soon as I heard the news yesterday, I thought: "Oh no, here we go - war with Iran through the Syrian back-door. Is this the 'terrorist act' to use as an excuse?" Then later, I heard ol' John Bolton foaming-at-the-mouth and accusing Syria. This isn't looking good...]

UPI analysis...
Lebanon's sickly politics took a sudden and unexpected turn for the worse with the assassination of Pierre Gemayel, a prominent anti-Syrian cabinet minister.

Damascus issued a statement saying it condemns the murder: "This despicable crime aims to destroy stability and peace in Lebanon."

"Just as Lebanon was heading toward a relatively peaceful atmosphere and all political parties had been trying to avoid rekindling of tensions, Gemayel was dastardly assassinated."

"The (assassination) act, which may have been carried out by political groups inside Lebanon or foreign states, was aimed at putting the Lebanese Hezbollah in a bad light."

A contention by a top US commander in the Middle East that a new global war could loom if Islamic militancy was not stemmed is indicative of the 'deep crisis' US neoconservatives are facing in the region, Arab politicians and strategists said. They told Deutsche Presse-Agentur that they were surprised by General John Abizaid's remarks at a time when the American people had voted in the mid-term Congressional elections 'to reject the crazy Middle East policy' pursued by the US administration.

Seymour Hersh is reporting in The New Yorker that Dick Cheney is in the middle of advocating a military strike on Iran. This could start a war with no foreseeable end. The US versus the whole Muslim world. Is there anything more dangerous in the world? Osama bin Laden would love to start a war like this, but he doesn't have the capacity. Cheney does. If we attack Iran without any provocation (or more likely with a flimsy, contrived provocation), we will set the world on fire. Not only will there be disastrous consequences for our troops in Iraq, for our citizens across the world, for the state of our military and our defenses at home, but there will also be enormous economic and political consequences.

Vatican Voo-doo...
In an historic event, the United States was consecrated to the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary by the U.S. bishops. "Most Holy Trinity, we put the United States of America into the hands of Mary Immaculate in order that she may present the country to You."

Housing Meltdown Poses “Systemic Risk”; Rubin On Threat To US Dollar; “America Risks A 1929-Style Crisis”

Over recent days, warnings of a systemic crisis, and impending financial blowout, have been issued by leading representatives of major US financial institutions. Until now - with the exception of New York Federal Reserve head Timothy Geithner - warnings about imminent implosion of the doomed financial bubble have come from European personalities, especially in London. Now, it appears that reality is about to strike home.

They are well done and compelling. They have some wonderful lines.
