The Daily WAR (13-13)

Reading between the lines, and thinking outside the box . . .

Europe is bailing out on us. Afghanistan is to be America's war. Why won't Europe fight?
Because Europe sees no threat from Afghanistan and no vital interest in a faraway country where NATO Europeans have not fought since the British Empire folded its tent long ago.
Moreover, Europeans have had their fill of war.

Turkish secular elites are worried about their country's direction. They argue that the AKP promotes a creeping Islamic agenda - one close to Muslim Brotherhood's fundamentalism.
In foreign policy, there are important signs that Turkey is drifting away from the West.

The Home Front Command is preparing to hold the largest exercise ever in Israeli history, scheduled to take place in about 2 months.

The US is paying increasing attention to Pakistan in its bid to bring stability to Afghanistan, amid fears that the nuclear state could collapse.
Rival Islamic militant groups are joining forces to make their country into a stronghold -- and are receiving support from Pakistan's ISI intelligence agency.

As the hostage drama off the coast of Somalia continued into its 2nd day Thursday, there were indications that the Obama administration may be preparing yet another military intervention, this time in the Horn of Africa.
Thus, the US armada — as well as the warships dispatched by a number of other powers, including Britain, Germany, India and China — are not patrolling the Somali coast to defend international law, which they have ignored when it comes to the ravaging of Somalia itself.
The purpose of the US intervention is to assert American hegemony over the strategically important sea lanes of the Gulf of Aden, through which nearly 12% of the world's oil is transported.

Iran inaugurated its first nuclear fuel manufacturing plant on Thursday and said it had increased its capability to enrich uranium.

Inch by painful inch, the chasm between America and Iran over the Islamic Republic's nuclear ambitions is quietly being narrowed.
Israel has always opposed the "freeze for freeze" proposal. But "freeze for freeze" is now America's position, backed by its allies.
The Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, has the final say over the nuclear programme. So far, the gap between him and America has only been narrowed in one direction.

Queen Elizabeth II, head of state of the United Kingdom and of 31 other states and territories, is the legal owner of about 6,600 million acres of land, one sixth of the Earth's non ocean surface.
She is the only person on earth who owns whole countries, and who owns countries that are not her own domestic territory. This land ownership is separate from her role as head of state and is different from other monarchies where no such claim is made.
The value of her land holding. £17,600,000,000,000 (approx). This makes her the richest individual on Earth.

The concern over Obama's eligibility to be president under the US Constitution's demand that the office be occupied by a "natural born" citizen is spreading, with additional writers conceding questions remain about the dispute.

The current architecture of international institutions must be updated, but skeptics question whether the United States is up to the task.
They need not worry: the United States still possesses enough power and legitimacy to spearhead reform.

Among the payoffs Larry Summers received: $45K from Merrill Lynch days before he joined Obama's team. And it gets worse.

The Pentagon sponsored a first-of-its-kind war game last month focused not on bullets and bombs — but on how hostile nations might seek to cripple the US economy, a scenario made all the more real by the global financial crisis.
In the end, there was sobering news for the US – the savviest economic warrior proved to be China, a growing economic power that strengthened its position the most over the course of the war-game.

Who killed our economy -- "foreigners," or Washington, Wall Street, and the War Party?

The New York Times on Thursday published a front-page article that provides further insight into the economic and class interests that are being served by the Obama administration's economic "recovery" policies.

The latest figures from Eurostat, the statistical arm of the European Commission, reveal the extent of the decline of the European economy following the eruption of the international economic and finance crisis.
The most recent figures for Germany — Europe's biggest exporter and the continent's largest economy by far — reveal that its economic decline is accelerating with a number of reports speaking of the country's exports in "free fall."

It's been 21 months since 2 Bear Stearns hedge funds defaulted setting off a series of events which have led to the gravest economic crisis since the Great Depression.
No one expected the financial meltdown to hit this hard or spread this fast.
Like millions of homeowners who have seen their home equity vanish and their retirement savings slashed in half, the banks are hunkering down hoping they can outlast the deflationary hurricane ahead.
By nearly every objective standard, the present downturn is worse than the Great Depression.
Manufacturing, industrial production, foreign trade, capital flows, consumer confidence, housing, and even stocks are falling faster today than after the crash of 1929.
So far, Bernanke's monetary bandaids have prevented the wholesale collapse of the financial system, but that could change.
The economy continues its downhill slide and it looks like there's nothing to stop it from falling further still.

A year after a 3,100-acre ranch in Colorado went on the market for $88 million, the owners have slashed the asking price to $68 million.

A document prepared by the Group of Eight, or G8, countries for its inaugural summit of agricultural ministers entitled "The Global Challenge: To Reduce Food Emergency" was leaked to the press this week, revealing the G8's concerns of global instability arising from a worldwide food crisis.
Should the present food crisis continue to gain momentum, the report goes on to say, it will have "serious consequences not merely on business relations but equally on social and international relations, which in turn will impact directly on the security and stability of world politics."

The only evolution in nature that is possible and can be called science is micro-evolution, which is variations within biological kinds such as varieties of dogs, cats, horses and cows.
Macro-evolution, or variations across biological kinds, is not possible. Why is this so?

NASA's twin STEREO probes are entering a mysterious region of space to look for remains of an ancient planet which once orbited the Sun not far from Earth.
If they find anything, it could solve a major puzzle -- the origin of the Moon.

Thousands of Christian clergymen, worshippers and pilgrims thronged the alleyways of Jerusalem's Old City, chanting hymns and bearing crosses as they marked Good Friday by retracing Jesus' final footsteps.
Orthodox Christians follow a different calendar and mark Good Friday on April 17.

For hundreds of years, many have either assumed or been told that Jesus died on a Friday afternoon, was placed in a tomb Friday evening and then was resurrected sometime around sunrise a day and a half later on Sunday morning.
But you may be surprised about what the Bible actually says concerning the timetable of these important events.
"If people would just crack open their own Bibles, they'd realize that not only are the words Friday and Sunday absent, but the widely perceived time frame is not possible if you believe the actual words of Jesus Christ," says Joe Kovacs, author of the best-selling book "Shocked by the Bible: The Most Astonishing Facts You've Never Been Told."
In "Shocked," Kovacs, a staunch defender of the Holy Bible, probes the day Jesus really died and the day He actually rose from the grave, all based on what the Bible itself has to say, not what centuries of misinformation and man-made tradition have led millions to believe.
